Armed Forces Fund reaches £1m mark

The Armed Forces Fund continues to make good progress since the highly successful Silver Ball last November. This was held in William and Diana Bailey’s Planit Supernova venue and attended by 900 friends of Radley, Downe House and St Mary’s, Calne. The £250,000 raised at the Ball enabled the Armed Forces Fund to reach £1,000,000.  The Fund has been set up to provide an education for the sons and daughters of service men and women killed or seriously wounded while serving their country.

Much work has now been done to publicise the Fund among Service personnel, and the hope is to have the first award made by next year.  Downe House School and St Mary's Calne are joining us in this campaign: sons will come to Radley and daughters to one of these two well-known girls' schools. If you would like to contribute please click here.  The Foundation is most grateful to those who have contributed and is very moved by the generosity of the donors for this worthwhile cause.

Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe Lieutenant Dougie Dalzell

Many members of the Radley community have been touched by the deaths of Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe and Lieutenant Dougie Dalzell in Afghanistan.  The first two bursaries awarded will be in their names.

The Radley Foundation reaches £10m

Since 2000 the Foundation has received lifetime gifts and legacy pledges that total £10m. Nearly £4m of this has been donated in the last two years.

The Silken Thread campaign of 2009/10 concentrated on increasing Radley’s means-tested bursary funds and the Silk Fund and Hugo Rutland Memorial Fund in particular. There are now 26 boys in the College (or at Prep Schools) on either Foundation Awards or Silk Awards and fund-raising continues so that this number can be further increased.

In addition to bursaries, the College Council has many plans for the future development of Radley, and capital projects under consideration include a major redevelopment of the Old Gym site, new rowing facilities in the heart of the College for when the river is unusable through flooding, an additional Astro pitch and improved all-weather cricket nets.
